Hi

I have just read the Microsoft website and read about two recent critical updates that are required to be downloaded. One is for protecting Windows 2000 and one is for updating security on Internet Explorer.

I am the administrator for a small network which runs Small Business Server 2000. On all client machines we run Windows 2000 Pro. We have the one internet connection which is on our server and then a router distributes it so internet access can be gained on all client machines on the network.

My questions are firstly to run the Windows updated do I have to update each client machine separately or can it be done once on the server? My other question is to update Internet Explorer do I have to do this on each client machine or can it be done only once on the server?

I logically suspect all updates have to be done on each client pc as they all run IE and Windows 2000 each.

Thank you for any help.

If I do have to run the security updates on each local pc is it ok to save the Microsoft EXE file updates to a network drive and run it from there by each local pc? Or should the update file be ideally saved and run from the C: drive?

Thank you again for any help.

Client programs must be updated, but it should be possible to run a local update server on your Win2000 server.

I thought that may be the answer. Thanks for your reply. However is it still ok to update each local pc by running an update that I have saved onto a network folder (accessible to all local pc's) and running the update from there? This would save me having to go to the Microsoft website each time to download, when I can download it once to a network folder, and run that file each time at the client machine.

Thank you for any help.

I am no expert, but I suppose it is OK to download first and install later. Hope other members can tell you how to
configure the local computers to initiate the upgrading.

Thank you for your reply. Yes Microsoft say it is ok to download and save first and then run at a later date. That is fine - only question is whether it is ok to run from a network drive/folder as opposed to running it from the local c:drive?

As far as I know it makes no difference whether you run it from the network drive or the local PC. The only difference may be speed from the network folder, however it doesd work out a better option.
