On two occasions when my floppy drive (1)has just written to the hard drive or (2)while waiting for it to respond to a floppy in the drive, the hard drive light has begun to flash indicating it was writing to the HD. The first incident occurred when a back up floppy had just updated Quicken and the second following the insertion of the DOS floppy used to initiate a Norton Ghost operation. Thereafter, in each case successive bootups stopped just before it would have gone into Windows. I reformatted on the first occasion but have not yet done so following the second incident. Does anybody have an idea what is happening here? Two other removable drives, one ME and the other 98SE, are running without problems.

As to why I wouldn't have a clue, but if you cannot boot your machine, try going into Safe Mode. If you can get into Safe Mode select the "Last Known Good Configuration" option and see if that fixes the boot problem.

Thanks, but can't get into SafeMode. Can bring up all the Windows files in DOS but none of the Windows files will run from DOS.

Further, I understand that in this situation if I had installed from an XP Home version, rather than the XP Home Upgrade version, I would be able to reinstall from a C: prompt. As it stands now, guess I have no alternative but to reformat, etc. Would appreciate confirmation from somebody on this point.

Don't understand the would be able to reinstall from C: prompt statement.
You can try a repair reinstall (keeps data and settings) - As far as I know you have similar options with upgrade as full version - you just need a qualifying product disk to supply during the install.
