Hi all, want to add a second DC to my Windows 2K network, and make the
new DC the FMSO?

The process as I see it is:
1. Add the new server to the network - Done
2. DCPRomo to get it replicating
3. Once replicated check and confirm.
4. DCPromo older DC to demote it, leaving the New AD as the FMSO

Will this work OK?

Thanks John

question is, why only one DC for your AD. that's no good.

BTW, what u do is correct and very straighforward.

Yes, I know thats why I am rectifying the problem. I want to move the FMSO leaving the old one possibly as a second DC.

Noticed you are an exchange consultant, want to move my Exchange database to another server whats the easiest way to do that?

jdukarm,

You should leave the original DC as a second DC. Why bother transferring the FSMO roles? Is it working fine now?

Yes it is working fine and I guess there is no reason to move them. Good point! Does it matter?

If it's working, why move them? That's what I say. Just add the second machine as another dc.

The only good moving them can do is break something...

very true, I will leave well alone.

Cheers John

for exchange 5.5---->2003?

throw in ex2003 into 5.5 site(in prior, set up ADC as well). you may google a lot of migration KB and step-by--step instructions.

no, moving the exchange server to another server altogether? Not migrating from versions. The current FMSO above is small exchange server. As we are growing want to move the exchange environment to its own brand new all singing all dancing server. So moving the DC/FMSO to another dinky server. Taking this current server off the network, moving the exchange database to a server named the same NETBIOS name so all the clients point to the right server name. Then put the old server back on the domain obviously renamed, and without Exchange as the second DC.

Does this make sense?

Thanks for all your help guys.

Rgrds, John
