Hello

over the last 6-7 days My computer at startup is running a exe call secedit. May be this has always happened but now it takes a min of 10 - 15 seconds to complete and is slowing down the startup time.

What is the purpose of this exe and does it need to run at startup?

Also I have found that my computer's performance is dropping ie the Internet is not as fast as it used to be, when I have more than 1 window open then close one, it will often close but distort the window behind it ie when I have a music player running and open then close another window the interface of the player will turn white for a few mmoents
Kind of a vague question I quess
Any sugestions on where I can start ti fix the problem
I have updated my nortons and have checked for viruses none that it could find

I am running WIN 2000 PRO on a 1ghz with 512 mb of memory

Kind of a vague question I quess

Well as far as the secedit.exe goes...this is just a command line utility for more or less configuring security policies on your computer. It doesn't need to run at startup and the simplest way I would suggest stopping it at startup would be to first go download "msconfig.exe" or copy it from a 98/xp machine. Win2k doesn't have this handy tool. Once you have done that you can just point and click what you want to run at startup. As far as your other performance issues are concerned its kinda vague...but I know from my experience that Norton is a pain in the butt and likes to hog the system, so I would first turn it off and see if that makes a difference. There's many things you could do, but that will hopefully get you started.

Cheers.

Agreed that there is no good reason for secedit.exe to be running at startup. Frankly, it would concern me if some batch program was calling secedit and messing with my security configuration at startup.

There are five things that the secedit command can be used for:
1. Analysis: (secedit /analyze) compares current security configuration to a stored security template of your choice
2. Configuration: (secedit /configure) goes and gets an existing security template and applies it to your system
3. Refresh (secedit /refreshpolicy) "refreshes" security settings, but I'm not sure what it refreshes from - never used this.
4. Export (secedit /export) used to create a security template file from a template stored in a security database
5. Template Validation (secedit /validate) checks to make sure the template is OK before you apply it

You say you noticed this about a week ago. Had you just made any changes to your system or added new programs that would involve carrying out any of these tasks at startup? If you haven't made any changes, then maybe you might want to post your question in the Security forum.

Thanks for the replys Guys helpful as always
