God day to you all.

I recently got back a quote from a vendor to install and configure an SEB modem. It seemed kind of high being that we don't even need remote alaram notification.
We basically need a modem that is not so feature robust but still offers secure login. We don't have a third party service provider that would need to receive any error messages that an SEB would send.
Any recommendations?

thanks in advance!

The USRobotics Courier Modem has login security.

Is there anything extremely difficult to set it up on te switch (ie tty config changes)? have you ever done this or anyone else setup one of these modems in this fashion?
Thanks!

AN ION modem works well. We use them and the SEBs for our PBX. the nice thing about the ION is it has multiple ports so you can hook up mulitple devices. You can also set up multiple users wiht access definitions.

Nothing has to be done on the PBX side for login security of the modem, as long as the tty is set up for a modem to begin with. The PBX doesnt care how you connect. it only cares that you have a valid PBX login lol

thanks for the info JcBWF.

in either case, would it be along the lines of an even swap? I have an SEB currently in place but it has died. I found the book it came with and ran the power up test and the LED did not stay powered up so i am guessing the battery is dead at least. I am just wondering as to what kind of work or changes to the switch will need to be made or if extra hardware (modem connectors, etc) is needed. i liked the idea of the courier.

here is an off the wall question. can a tty port go bad and need to be replaced or the cable that extends it? this might be a whole other subject though...

thanks!

If you have an SEB there, you can disconnect it, plug the new device (courier or ion or whatever) and it will work with no PBX programming required.

Did you verify the outlet the SEB is in had power? It could be the battery is dead but it should not go dead if it has commercial power there.

yes a TTY port or Cable CAN go bad, the easy way to eliminate that is to plug in a known working modem and test.

the battery on the SEB is dead. there was some info in the handbook that came with the modem on initial power up and what should stay lit and such. i cycled the power on it and the the pwr led should have stayed on but it didnt.

Well i might have more than an SEB issue. while i was statting the tty's in LD 37, they came back enbl. i was unable to get port 0 to respond back with ready for input when i ran TTY 0.

i thought maybe i would out the port than rebuild it.

according to the book the modem came with, it needs to be sent back to replace the 6 volt battery. If its cheaper to just get a new modem, I would prefer to go that route. I don't need the alarm notification that the SEB provides, just something secure so i can remote into the switch.

Now to figure out whats going on with the port 0. the terminal config has not changed and the port config has not changed either. I only get ???? for anything I type and I have reset the terminal, although when i connect the terminal to port 1, it works just fine. i should probably start a new thread.

thanks all!

is this an option 11 or bigger switch?
