Searching ... indexed files

yes.
need to make sure that you are using Reader with the SEARCH plug-in installed. you can go to the Adobe website and download Reader 5.0.5. (i think earlier versions of Reader had separate downloads-1 for Reader, no search, and 1 for Reader with search.
to search an index:
first you have to "attach" the index files to Reader. on the menu Edit | Search | select indexes.
to query, Edit | Search | Query.
you can also set the preferences for the search parameters under Edit | Preferences | Search
