Hi,

When I enter Search companion in Windows XP and try to type any character, after keypress it pops up the error "Windows Explorer has encountered an error....", I am not able to search any phrase.

Any idea to resolve this problem.

Regards,
Tayyab

Try this link with a view to fixing your search engine.
Click on WIN XP FIXES on the left of the page and look for "Win XP Search Problems".

This link (and its leads) will offer you a precis of general search problems and fixes.

The one with the srchasst.inf file may be worth a try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

If it works in Safe Mode try this -
Removing adware & spyware
faq608-4650

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Dear Linney,

I tried followings:

i) Restored the system to an earlier stage
ii) Tried to run search in Safe Mode
iii) Ran chkdsk

But no joy.
I could not run sfc /scannow because i don't have Windows XP CD with SP2 because I installed SP2 separately.

Would you please give me any other hint to make search work

Regards,
Tayyab

Did you try the Doug Knox site or the srchasst.inf file?

Did you look at Removing adware & spyware?

Might be worth a try anyway even though Safe Mode failed.

Running this small program may or may not help?
Internet Explorer Fix

Using the "A Word or Phrase in the File" Search Criterion May Not Work

Agent Ransack is an alternative search engine you could try.

When you have a bit of time (after you have solved your current problem) have a look at these links.

Dear Linney,

I installed Anti-Virus Software, updated it and ran a scan for viruses, it didn't find any virus threat, but after doing this I tried to search, it worked perfectly.

Do you see any reason...

Tayyab

Dear Linney,

would you please explain your last reply.

Thanks & Regards,
Tayyab

For future problems, Google for a program called "AutoStreamer". This program (free), asks for the original XP CD - then the SP-2 (file or CD) - then creates an image you burn to a CD. You end up with a "SlipStreamed" CD - XP and SP-2, on one CD.
