I am running WIN XP Pro. Any search attempts in Windows Explorer results in a blank results window and small error message box in the center of the screen that just says "Search Companion" with an exclamation point in a yellow triangle and an "OK" button. Anybody have any idea what is going on...??? Thanks.

Try this link with a view to fixing your search engine.
Click on WIN XP FIXES on the left of the page and look for "Win XP Search Problems".

HI,

works perfectly...
Thanks

Jeff

my problem is strange when i click the search in start button i see a blank screen i cannot do anything. The "edit" button in the menu doesn not have any entries and the "file" in menu has only "close" option visible. when this happened i donot know.
have win xp home edition on a compaq computer

Are you talking about left or right click on Start Button to access Search?

In any case you could try the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

I tried sfc/scannow it went thru without a hiccup. About the search button u access search from right/left click or from within explorer result is same blank screen. Another thing, when i opened the useraccount screen it is also Blank from control panel, start button it is blank. so now i cannot add or modify user also. oops where will it end i do not know.

I even tried installing srchasst.inf from the c:\windows\inf directory.

I also installed the Q319949 from microsoft knowledgebase which suggests that if ur internet is open and search also open then it may corrupt the search companion.

Harshu,

Does this look like your problem:

When using your computer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

. Nothing happens when you click the hyperlinks on Web pages that are supposed to open a new window.
. Nothing happens when you right-click a hyperlink on a Web page, and then click Open in a new window.
. You select a hyperlink in Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express and it does nothing.
. In a drag-and-drop operation, when you attempt to drop an item to the Start menu or any folder on the system, the mouse cursor changes to a circle with a slash through it and it does not enable you to drop anything.
. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, on the Edit menu, when you click Find (on This Page), it may not work or it may only work once.
. If you point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders, it does not work.
. The Search On the Internet feature does not work.
. When you try to start Microsoft Office Assistant, you may receive the following error message:

Problem occurred using Office Assistant, Do you want to reinstall it?
. When you try to drag-and-drop a file from Outlook 2000 to a folder, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot create another system semaphore.
You cannot print from in Internet Explorer.
You cannot print HTML messages in Outlook.
Note that this functionality appears to fail in Windows Explorer and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

When did this start to happen? If it was only recently perhaps using System Restore to go back a few restore points may fix it.

Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?

Sometimes this type of problem may occur if some of your Windows Updates have fallen over or otherwise got corrupted. It might be worth a try to run QfeCheck and see if any updates need to be reinstalled.

If you have tried the various search fixes at -

and Bcastner doesn't cure it you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
