I am wanting a cell/box in the centre of my web pages, surrounded by other cells & to stay the same size.

The centre box is for text, so depending on the amount of text there is on each page, some will need a scroll bar so the viewer can run through the information without the size of the cell, and page, changing.

I was originally using s template but as the cell for text had to be editable to put different text in for each page, the size changed to fit the text.

I've attempted using frames (which I've never even touched on before) but because this cell is central I need at least 5 frames on my page which is confusing me somewhat.

Is there any way to get this effect without using frames - ie just make a table/cell with a scroll bar?

Try taking some of your javascript functions and replace them with Flash. I think you'll find in most cases your real world performance will improve. I don't even bother with JS anymore except for (maybe) menu functions and the like. JS calls may load once but compared to Flash they are usually heavier and they don't stream which is the real key. You don't see the weight with Flash if it is designed right.

I have been replacing JS functions in sites I maintain with Flash the last few months and I have been seeing much better load perceived load times. One caveat - the JS I used was mostly free stuff from the net and maybe it wasn't the best code ever produced - however - realistically that is the code most of us use. Peace

But then you have totally duplaicte your site mapping in html anyway or search engines won't find your pages. Thne javascript I use is crawlable.

And who streams flash? Preloaders almost are used.

All Flash is streamed. The preloaders are just used to buffer up some of the movie if it happens to be very long. For menus and the like the load (stream) time is very short so they just 'pop' in.
Peace
