Script executing slow

What could be the cause for a perl script to execute slow?
At first I thought it was the loops, but I tried to comment out the loops and it was still slow. What could it be?

It could be the approach to how your trying to accomplish your goal in the script. If you could, please post your script so we can take a look-see. Also, if you could, please post which operating system you're using. (Sometimes that does matter)
