Running XP Home updated to SP3 on a HP Pavilion 360. I've installed all M$ patches & updated all running apps. It was badly infected with an expired AV app. I cleaned out all the nasties using MBAM, Spybot, Avast & anything else I could throw at it. HJT log is clean, but screensaver tab is still missing. I've tried adding new values to registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER & HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to no avail. I don't want to reformat the HD & reinstall everything if not necessary (especially since he's not sure if he has the OS disk - I have one here but it was for a Dell PC, so I'm not sure if that would work). Any suggestions?

Hi Ben,
It was on a new HD I had here that I installed XP on. It didn't seem right to me that the CPU wasn't OK but can't fathom what's wrong. Again, Windows Update fails to complete be it from CD or their web site. Power supply, cooling fans & PC temp is fine. All my tests say it's (to use NASA terms) it's a go but the PC says, 'Houston, we have a problem'. I'm trying for some humor before I pull the rest of my hair out. I was hoping to repair it for my stepdaughter who's getting her life together & could use it. If not, I'll salvage parts from it as much as I'd hate to as it's a decent system.

Thanks for any more help, Bob

Is there anything USB plugged in?Are ther integrated peripherals such as video or sound? If so have you tried to disable them in the BIOS and see if the issue persists.

Could these two pieces of information be the root cause of your current problem?

"XP Home updated to SP3 on a HP Pavilion 360"

"I installed a new HD & installed XP Home from a Dell disc I had"

Maybe it just wants the correct Install CD, or the correct Chipset or Motherboard drivers?

Any clues in the Device Manager, Event Viewer, or Install Setup logs?

Maybe it is time to spend a few dollars and obtain the correct recovery media from the manufacturer?

See the paragraph "Replacement OEM or system builder software media"
