On a Windows 2k Professional machine, I was browsing the internet, and had Internet Explorer open. Then I heard a sound like a symbol clanging or a door slamming, then the screen shook. After that everything was fine. Is this some kind of new virus I should be concerned about, or is this something anyone has seen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok correction. It happens randomly ONLY when you open IE. It's more like a bell, like a Big Ben type bell sound. Any ideas?

Yeah there is a couple viruses that will do that..some by the name of quake...up to date virus definitions? and if so what is the virus scan coming up with..if not...try
thats an online virus scanner (free of course)....and you may want to pick up "adaware" and "spybot search and destroy" at Make sure you check for updates for each, there should be a link in the actual program...if everything turns out ok, then I blame Microsoft and tell you to do Windows Update.

1. Using Norton AV with all updated virus defs.
2. Everything was already updated from Windows Update
3. I have Spybot Search & Destroy already installed (I find it better than Ad-Aware) - I'll have to try running that.

check your running proccesses too..look for anything unusual...could be some kind of theme, I guess if you got everything updated. Try reinstalling IE service packs...

Nothing suspicious under processes. Spybot didn't find anything peculiar. I'm not going to reinstall SP for IE, it's not like it's stopping the pc from working, and doing all that's too time consuming =)

I experienced the same thing on an internet ad for a new heavy duty truck. I was amazed they could do that with a pop up ad. Nothing to worry about.
