screen resolution and refresh rate

It seems that the highest I can go on my screen is 1280/768 at 32bit color depth at 85Hz refresh rate. I have a 17inch monitor and a GeForce MX440 64MB video card. I would like to use a higher resolution and a higher refresh rate but it seems that I'm unable to. Is this dependent on the screen size or on the video card capabilities? Can anybody help? Thanks

My PC configuration is P4 2,0 GHz with 256RAM

210210, thats about right for a standard 17inch monitor, and to be honest, your GF4 MX440 is going to struggle set any higher than this even if it could display it.
A new Graphics card and monitor is required if you want to "GO STELLA"

Yes, the higher you set the resolution and refresh rate, the "slower" 3D graphics will display on your screen.

The refresh rate is normally controlled by the video card driver, but if you have a specific monitor type selected in Windows, that may also restrict you. For example, if you use a generic Plug & Play monitor selection, then the refresh rate is left up to you and what your video card supports. But if the monitor is recognized by Windows and is listed something like Viewsonic E55 for example, then it knows by the make/model and doesn't care if the video card supports higher refresh rates.

[tt]hmm... why would you want to use that high a resolution on a 17incher? i use a Viewsonic E70 17inch monitor, but i use only 800x600 32bit color with my nvidia tnt2 ultra 32MB card. dont need the extra resolution with my games so far. it displays my games faster in this mode as it is sluggish when i go to 1024x768 32bit color.

anyway, if you still want to use that resolution or higher, why not use the lower 16bit or 24bit color? monitors and video cards can use higher resolutions but usually at the cost of color depth.

cdogg, thought that feature is useful as it would know how high a resolution your monitor can support/display? coz if it cant support the resolution, the monitor wont even show anything right? i'd like to have your opinion on this one please...

For the most part, yes. If the correct monitor is listed in Windows, then you should only see the refresh rates that your monitor supports. It can also depend on the version of Windows. Of course, even with that in mind, I'm not sure I would totally rely on that notion. It's always best to get the specs for your monitor so that you don't accidently over-do it.

Most monitors that are 17-inches or larger should easily support up to 85Hz for the refresh rate. It's not uncommon to see high refresh rates of 100hz or 120hz on newer monitors. Screen resolution, on the other hand, varies greatly and depends on the manufacturer.

Ermmm Relaksuah, if you use 800X600 screen resolution on a 17in monitor, does that mean that you would use 1280X768 on a 21in monitor???? I don't play games and I like to fit many windows on the screen. Anyway..........I hope one day to be using 1600X1200 with a bigger monitor and a better video card......
