Is this on a laptop or desktop? If its a desktop CRT tube monitor then you should be able to adjust it with the buttons on the monitor itself.
On a laptop its a little more tricky but look at your keyboard. It should allow you to adjust your monitor somewhere.

sounds like the wrong monitor is setup on your system, or you need updated drivers for your graphics card.
check your monitor setting and make sure you don't have the default (laptop) setup if you're using a standard VGA, see if you can find the make and model under the (show all devices). the correct one should eliminate your problem
