motherboard = Gigabyte K7 Triton
processor = AMD athlon 2600+

working fine before crash

What is the exact error message you are receiving when you try to boot now?

Do you know which Windows Update (if any) caused this problem?

You could try using the Recovery Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

When you get it loaded have a look at the Fixmbr command.

Fixmbr repairs the boot partition's master boot code.

Also try running the Chkdsk command too.

Can you access Safe Mode?

One way of removing a Windows Update is to repair Windows. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

the problem is that i cannot even access a harddrive, it is as if they are gone

it says when trying to run recovery console

no harddrive connected

please check the harddrive is connected properly turned on and stuff like that.

plz i need help

thanks

Clear your BIOS settings, and see if it will autodetect the drive(s) again.

If not open the case and check all cables and power connections. Pull them all off and reseat them.

Try to see if BIOS can detect the drives properly.

Your initial error sounds exactly like a hard disk issue.

is data recovery from a hard disk possible, because it looks like i will need that as very important information is contained on those

If there is data on your harddrive it is more than likely recoverable. If your machine can't recognise the hardrive you may have to remove it and try it in another machine.

Let's hope it's like "Bcastner" says and just turns out to be a loose connection.

Your harddrive manufacturer will have free diagnosing software to check the drive.

It may also be one of those quirky faults that if you turn the machine off overnight and try it again in the morning, everything is OK (but I doubt it).
