Yes and voice quality is acceptible but try to avoid it if you can. the only way we have been happy with this type connection is if the vpn tunnel is on the same network.
In other words you dont want to have to many hops in between or it will be very eratic.

Yes, make sure they are the same carrier if possible and test the number of hops between sites using tracert.
Also depending on if other traffic is going to be going between offices via the vpn tunnel you might want to invest in vpn routers that will do qos over the tunnel.
Sonicwall, cisco, netscreen, have this capability I believe.

thanks for the help. the dsl are through verizon and there is only one phone at the other location for now. It weorked pretty easily.

We have over 70 ip offices coinnected via a vpn, works great , but mind the specs , 8Kb per voice line is needed !

Superguppie - Do you have the 70 locations tied into the same SCN? If affirmative, any anomolies to features function or performance?

I thought there was a 500 phone limit to an SCN?

We have 70 offics with four or five phones each , and a hq with about 90 phones.
The problems we have now are about nill today , but we had a hell of a start.....
If you ever start these kind of locations , think about the structure first, and think ahead.
We started with "VOIP" and ended with many different types of voicemail attendees and all connected true and with each other .
Dont mention the Least Call Route , i needed valium for that hahahaha
The only thing i'm now need to be really working on is fax over ip , but it doenst do well yet..... (only one out of three makes it...)

I would second the thought on getting a high quality VPN router. Home quality reouters will not work for this...
we have tried Linksys and Netgear and they dont cut it ... went from unacceptable to "pin drop" clear just by changing the router to a Kentrox QOS series router. we now have 4 locations tied togeather with VPN 3 Kentrox and one Sonicwall ( that also seems to do very well) Just dont skimp on the router.

Kentorx is an Avaya Labs tested Product and a Devconnect Partner. The Q-Series is all we have used for the last 2 years. They are releasing new code in March with some VPN enhancements for tunnels with Dynamic IP addresses.

hi there
I still didnt get the fax completetly working , its still 1 out of 3 , i have found out that complete ascii faxes go 100 % , but the more complex faxes get a error 400 on our panafaxes (incomplete file), i have fax support on , silent supression on , dont forget it to do on boith sides of the line ...... i've tried a second vpn , consisting ONLY out of faxes , but it still goes 1 out of 3.
i now changed the type of routers , we began with copperjet modems from allied data (extemele cheap) , with a special config ( thanx allied data) , but now we are both using voice , data and video on 1 256 k line (dont drop out of your chair....) we needed some wizardry. Ive found it in a new employee of the company who is a wiz with cisco stuff , he made a policiing ??? into the routers and did some magic with the vpn , now it has a kind of quality over service, but not for the price of qualti over service.
so, making a log story short, no i did not get the faxes working 100 % yet, but we're still fighting for it, i personally think it will reduce costs for about 20 % more !! , thatway i will earn my vacation again hahahaha

I have a question for those of you that have deployed over DSL vpns - did you use or did it require to have static IP addresses at the remotes? I have a similar situation where a customer is looking to tie in about 4 remote locations using VPN over DSL. I believe that 3 of the 4 remotes are with the same carrier but the fourth is in a location served by another LEC.

I have always used static IP's on DSL to create the VPN's for SCN. I'm sure you can do it with dynamic (I have just to test out a theory) but I don't think it is a reliable way to do it.

For those of you who have no alternative than to use Dynamic IP addressing, you can use a dynamic DNS hosting solution. You need 3 things. 1. A VPN router that supports Dynamic DNS service. 2. A dynamic DNS host, we use . 3. A registered Domain Name with the DNS hosted at the dynamic DNS hosting Service.
When your VPN router is programmed for Dyamic DNS, each time it recognizes an IP address change from your ISP, it will reach out to the dynamic DNS hosting service and tell is to update the DNS table with the new IP address.
Works like a champ.
