Been running Win XP Pro SP2 for some time with an HP R65 OfficeJet using LPT1 set to ECP. (PC Spec: P4/3200, 1 Gb RAM, 250 Gb HDD) Some weeks ago the R65 stopped, but I was able to get it printing from the PC OK, and will scan a document direct to printer. But the PC does not want to know the Scanner.
No Imaging Devices listed in Device Manager, but a Yellow question mark appears in Other stating R60.
I have followed the HP detailed instructions without success (including a full virus check)and the install program just cannot find the drivers which according to HP are the Scanning drivers included with Win XP. I have searched elswhere on the Net and this is my last hope for a solution, before I try an "upgrade" re-install of Win XP.

DO NOT RE-INSTALL XP

go into device manager and delete the R60 with the yellow question mark. next disconnect the scanner from you PC, re-boot.

edit your registry and delete any references to the R60 or other printer/scanners not currently being used by you.

install the HP Scanner software that came with the scanner, shut down your PC.

connect the scanner and turn the PC on. at this point it should pick up the scanner with the software you installed.

if you do not have the software that came with the scanner then skip para 3 above and XP should use the MS driver for the scanner.

HP is finicky and sometimes this clears up the problems.

Thanks for the tip eyec. However HP are adamant (on their Website)to NOT install their software but to use the drivers within Win XP (which I cannot access). I have already been through the registry to clear all reference to both the R60 and R65, but will start from this angle once more. I will do as you suggest tomorrow and advise. Thanks for your time.

Is the WIA service started?
Start, Run, services.msc and check.

Yes Bill, WIA Is running. Still no joy! Probably time to go buy a new scanner, but I like to solve these problems!
Thanks all

Hmmmm.
It is perfectly possible something went bad on the scanner interface, but my gut instinct says to try some other things:

. try setting in the BIOS the parallel port to something bidirectional, but not ECP. EPP for example. I want to force XP to rediscover the port and all settings. This MS KB article has a complete workthrough:
. since HP is insistent that you are going to use native XP drivers for scanning, rebuild them if possible. "AutoFix" I believe will do so:

Still without success. Set port to EPP and AutoFix did not help. So I proceded as follows:
1 Uninstalled all HP software
2 Searched Registry for HP entries. No R65 (Model printed on the OfficeJet) just R60. Most entries could not be deleted, even in Safe mode. I am only user so have Administrator rights!
3. Rebooted (Win XP Pro)with parallel cable disconnected.
4. Connected cable and XP found R60 All-in-one.
5 Printing from Word, now OK
6 Device Manager lists the R60 printer, and in "Unknown", lists the R60 All-in-one Scanner
7. Attempted the "Update Driver" from Properties. XP starts installing, but stops with the message "Can't Find Required Drivers"
8 Have searched many places, but cannot find the names of the "Required Drivers". They are certainly not on my Win XP Pro (slipstreamed SP2) CD.
9 Just about had enough, so a new all-in one, complete with XP drivers looks to be a worthwhile purchase.
Thanks for your suggestions - appreciated.
