Out netWorker server's hard drive went out and I had to reinstall everything. This is an SGO 6.5.30 connected to a STK L40 via SGI's APD software. NetWorker is 7.3.2 jumbo11

When I try to recover the server's NetWorker indexes and etc... I get errors in mmrecov dealing with scanner:
scanner: please enter record size for this volume (`q` to quit) [64] <pressed enter>
uasm: invalid save stream
Cannot Mount volume on /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrns
mmrecov: uasm exited with error 1

So I run scanner:
scanner -vvvvv /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrns
output:
scanner: Reading the label...
scanner: Reading the label done
scanner: NetWorker notice: no tape label found

Which means of course I can't recover any indexes.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve

I should add this is the same version of NW the last backups were done with and we get the scanner error with any tape we try, not just this one.
Thanks!

Are you sure you did not change the device type and/or the blocksize?

If you use scanner before mmrecov, it should tell you the actual block size.

Thank you for your reply.
No, I am not sure about a change in the block size. I followed the prompts and advice from SGI but there didn't seem to be any opportunity to change it.
I am not too familiar with the block sizes but thought this was a variable block size system (SGI IRIX).
The device type and all the parameters is auto detected by the OS on install.

I ran scanner first and get the same errors.
Output:

scanner: /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrns: opened for reading
scanner: /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrns: rewinding
scanner: Rewinding done
scanner: Reading the label...
scanner: Reading the label done
scanner: NetWorker notice: no tape label found
scanner: NetWorker notice: no tape label found
scanner: scanning for valid records...
scanner: read: 0 bytes
scanner: /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrns: opened for reading
......
repeats

I can put a tape in another NW server and it can read it, but I already assumed that would be the case.
So how would I determine and/or set the block size?
Thanks,
Steve

The block size is also reported in the device setup. So verify the block size in the "good" server and setup the drive the same way on the other server. However, it might be that the block size is different because somebody has changed it.

On the other hand, the label is always written with 32kB so it should be able to read it. If not, i think there is a hardware problem.

Here is what we found now;
when the tape library and NetWorker was first installed the SGI tape support daemon (part of APD) was not licensed properly. This somehow messed up the config.
We removed the tape library from NetWorker, ran jbconfig and it seems to work now.
Not sure what it means but it added a vc at the end of the tape device name; /dev/rmt/tps1d2nrnsvc

Thanks you for you help 605. I hope you teach my NetWorker class if I ever get to take it!
