what's wrong with chkdsk? (you know, the built in disk checking app)

Just typing CHKDSK won't do anything. The correct way is to open a DOS window and type: CHKDSK/F.

Without the /F chkdsk does nothing. /F tells it to fix the errors on the hard drive it finds.

I tried yours and guess what.. file not found.. Did you know there is supposed to be a space between chkdsk and/f?? Works better that way !!

As for plain old chkdsk, I just finished running it and guess what.. it found and removed two uneeded files. So much for the /f parameter.

And inside XP you can right-click a drive, select Properties > Tools tab > Error Checking "Check Now" box. This results in a Check Disk applet that has options to "Automatically fix file system errors" and to "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

Sloth is the mother of invention. Necessity is just a mother...
