My desktop PC used to run scandisk if the machine did not shut down properly but now it doesn't. I have managed to add a shortcut to the desktop to run scandisk in Windows as part of the startup process BUT this is not really what I want. I only want it to start in DOS after a failed shutdown.

Does anyone know a solution?

Hold down the CTRL on boot after a bad shutdown, and choose Command Prompt Only....you'll have atleast 5 choices including Safe Mode.....maybe 6 or 7 depending on any Networking cards

CT004691,
In Windows 95/98/ME when Windows is incorrectly shutdown, or the turn is power turned off, the system will normally attempt to run Scandisk on the next boot. This is controlled by a setting in the file MSDOS.SYS. You'll need to change the atributes of this file before editting it as it is (or should be) Read Only. Edit the file and look for the line that says 'Autoscan='. The valid values and their meanings are as follows:
AutoScan=0 : Scandisk is Disabled
AutoScan=1 : Scandisk Prompts First
AutoScan=2 : Scandisk Runs Automatically
You'll have to reboot after changing.

I think that if you are running XP there is a registry setting that disables or enables as follows:
Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]
Value Name: DisableScandiskOnBoot
Data Type: REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value Data: 01 = Disable 00 = Enable

Get back to me if you need further help.

Already tried that but had problems editting the MSDOS.SYS file. You forgot to mention how I change the Read Only setting!

Drop into explorer, right click on the file and choose the 'properties' setting. You will see a check box that says 'read only' and it should be checked for that file. Uncheck it, and the file should be editable. Best to back it up first before changing it.

If you go;
Start/Run MSCONFIG
On the "General" tab click 'Advanced' and check the box that says "Disable Scandisk after Bad Shutdown"....Restart

Then, Use my procedure above about CTRL key on startup and you'll enter DOS.....
