SBS2003 and 'hidden users'

Added a user in AD users and computers, made a a mistake so deleted the user, user is gone from the user list. BUT when I try and re add the user I get a 'the logon name is in use, choose another'.
I guess the user account has got stuck in limbo, is there a way I can check or purge?
Any ideas welcome.
