I run SBS server 2003 and use BrightStor ARCserve Backup and I have selected all of the C: to be backed up and I get the following errors in the log, is this normal/OK. Exchange is in use but SQL not used I did not even think we had it.

The first two entries are the backup utility trying to access the Exchange information stores through a normal file access. You don't want to do this, as it can cause corruption in the information store and doesn't actually do a complete, recoverable backup of the Exchange data.

The rest of errors relate to monitoring and web components of SBS. SBS will use MSDE, which is a "Lite" version of SQL server, for its monitoring and Sharepoint companyweb databases. Again, a proper backup of these components goes beyond a basic file level copy.

Most backup vendors sell an SBS specific version that includes the utilities needed to properly backup Exchange and SQL server, or at least the MSDE based data.

Brightstor has this:
If you just purchsed the full version, you might try calling a sales rep to see about upgrading/getting credit for the version you purchased.

If that doesn't work out for you, Veritas also has an SBS specific product and might have a deal for changing vendors.

Finally, the basic included Windows NTBackup is upgraded in SBS to provide basic Exchange/SQL backup. You lose flexibility in media management/reporting, but it does work.

Thanks for that reply, I have the Brightstor Arc v11 win/svr OLP version. This presumably is not entirley correct with the SBS and I need an additional licence/upgrade to agent exchange etc to enable correct backup of the above files. At the moment I have excluding all the problem files from the backup.

Does this mean in the event of a restore my exchange/mailboxes and its data will be useless ?

Correct - Your Exchange mailboxes will not be protected, and actually weren't before with the skip errors.

I think your best bet is try to get Brightstor to switch versions for you. I have no idea of your chances for success, but start by contacting one of their reps directly, tell them what you have, and that you really need their SBS product.
