I am running SBS SP1 as a router/DC for a church. I can access the internet fine when connected through the existing linksys router, but when I remove the router and plug the server directly into the cable modem, it says invalid network address was given from the isp. The RRAS service seems to be somewhat working because the computers on the internal network connect through the sever, then to the router and out to the internet fine. Anyone know why this all quits working when I take the linsys router out of the loop?

Thanks

Kenny

Sometimes DSL/Cable co.'s authenticate via MAC address or something similar with the router. Why would you want to unlink the router anyway?
Is it an ADSl connection? Maybe it uses PPPOe or similar?

yes keep the linksys in the loop

your easiest bet...set teh linksys internal IP to be 10.x.x.x or something like that and turn off dhcp/nat functions..install DHCP scope with same settings on server....userl inksys as gateway....have a beer...or wait this is a church...have a picnic :)

almost got a paragraph there :)

Thanks for the help guys. The problem with having the router there is I want to set up a VPN at the church so people can connect from home. The router just complicates this more. Any other ideas? Would a crossover cable maybe be my problem? Its a straight cable from the cable modem to the WAN port on the router... I used the same cable to connect the cable modem to the PC. Just a thought...

Thanks

well you could always mutlihome your server. However, you will need anotehr server, as you do NOT want ot multihome your DC (a desktop PC with server version installed will be sufficient). after that you can set up RRAS and use your second NIC for its gateway basically...however as mentioend before...you have the MAC issue.....alot of times a outer needs its MAC cloned to match a machine...looks like in this case its opposite...MAC on machine would need closned to routers to get a connection, which is not possible.

I'm sure the Linksys could handle VPN(at least one concurrent?) Or o/wise use PCanywhere?
