Saving Problem

Hi there,

This is a problem that I'm sure most people here easily know how to solve - but I don't!

Basically, whenever I save a Dreamweaver file, all the links automatically save as links to my local files rather than to the directories on the server. This means I'm having to go back and change all the HTML to reflect this when I save.

(e.g. I try to save as images/picture.gif and it automatically changes the path to c:/My Documents/My Websites/Rachael/images/picture.gif)

I'm very new to Dreamweaver so apologies if I've just asked an embarrassingly simple question.

Hi Rachael,

Stop apologizing! Everybody has got to start somewhere!

If I am reading your post right, you are saying that you want to save the file you are working on right now to the remote server right? If yes, then:

Step 1: You need to set up your Local Info, Testing Server Info, and Remote Info.

Step 2: Dreamweaver has a “Put File”(Blue up arrow in the “files” window) function and a “Get File” (Green down arrow in the “files” window) function. “Put File” is for uploading files to the remote server while “Get File” is for getting file from the remote server. What you need right now is the “Put File” function. Now, save that document you are working with just like you would save any documents on your computer(Save it in your web folders located on your local drive of course). That document you’ve just saved is saved on your local drive. Now you need to upload it to the remote server: select that document that you want to upload in the “File” window, then click the “Put File” button (blue up arrow), then Dreamweaver will upload that file to the corresponding folder located on the remote server.

I haven't been uploading the files onto the remote site using Dreamweaver - I've been doing it using FTP_LE.

The problem seems to be when I save the file locally (i.e. before I'm ready to upload to the remote site).

When I save the file locally, instead of saving the file extensions as I've programmed them in (e.g. images/picture.gif), it automatically adds the local file path to the link (e.g. c:/My Documents/My Websites/Rachael/images/picture.gif). Therefore, when I go to upload, it keeps in these local links and none of the images/links work (as it's all pointing to my local computer).

Sorry if I'm not explaining things well enough, but I really do appreciate your reply.

Hi Rachael,

Sorry for misunderstanding your problem, Oops . Just to make sure, the FTP_LE you are using has a screen on the left which shows your local files and a screen on the left which shows your remote files, right? If yes,

1)Make sure you don't just upload the page itself, upload the images that goes with that page too.

2)Make sure your file structure on your local machine is the same as the files structure on the remote server.

Let me know how you are doing, if you have already done the above steps before, let me know than we will proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Everything's fine regarding the uploading. I usually just hardcode with HTML for webpages and it's just with Dreamweaver I'm having these problems.

It's basically the way it automatically adds the local path structures to any links in the document when I save it. I *thought* there was an option in Dreamweaver where you could stop it doing this, but I'm probably completely wrong as I'm such a novice on the package(!)

Hi Rachael,

Hm… I have been searching for documentations that talk about the saving problem you are having, but they just talk about saving your file first before creating the document itself and a lot of other relevant topics, but would probably do nothing much to solve your problem. Well, this is the first time I have ever heard of Dreamweaver adding an absolute path to your URLS, since in their documentations they said something like Dreamweaver will automatically convert your absolute local paths to document relative paths once you save your document, but now your problem seems to be the other way around… Have you ever consider using Dreamweaver for web editing AND uploading? Their interfaces are quite simple, and you might (I’m not sure) be able to get out of that tedious saving problem you are having.
Also, check your FTP uploader to see if it has anything to do with it. Well, Rachael, that’s about what I could do for you for now since I really haven’t encounter any problem like this before, but I would keep my eyes open for any documentations regarding the problem you are having though.

Howdy...

This is a common problem.

This may seem obvious but...
If you sometime recenlty Defined a Site, even testing, Dreamweaver will assume that you are working relitive to the "Site" the next time you open it and place this path. Normally it will promt you, saying "...the image selected is not in the site... do you want to make a copy... etc."

Is Dreamweaver doing this? If this is the case... You will need to change a setting in the "Select Image Source" that Dreamweaver uses when inserting an image. At the bottom of the dialog box, set "Realtive to:" setting to "Document Root".

This seems to be a symptom of Dreamweaver's functionality when a sequence of actions occure. I don't know why this happens, I just end up having to save the page and close Dreamweraver and try again... then it just stops.
