I have a computer that I think the HD is going bad. Sometimes the HD will turn on other times it just clicks when the computer starts. Anyway, it is running off of Windows 2000 Pro. I was going to install a new HD and install Windows XP on it. The only problem is I don't have the drivers for the on-board cards such as the Modem and the sound card. What would be the best way to save these drivers in order to transfer them onto the new HD.

Thanks

The 2000 drivers may work with XP, but being a different operating system XP may require its own drivers. XP includes a large collection of drivers already which are loaded at Setup. In most cases these will cope with your system configuration.

If you can get hold of a XP CD and run the Compatibility Checking program it will tell you what compatibility problems (if any) you may expect and then you can chase XP drivers from your equipment manufacturers site.

If you try saving your 2000 drivers you may run into a problem of how to install them as copying them to XP may not install settings into the XP Registry.

thanks for the help I guess I will forget that idea. Appreciate it.

download (freeware) WinDriversBackup this program will backup all your windows system drivers.

However as linney pointed out this may not work for your purposes but it's a great way to ensure your current drivers are safe should you need to re-install or new install. Make sure you copy the folder over to your new HD first. Then, just point to where they are saved and windows will do the rest!

Cheers

Thx to all who respond ;)

Clone it baby.
1. removed the connection of the CDrom drive and plugin your new Hdd. I assumed that this is IDE2 connection.
2. Run ghost.exe and clone it, disk1 to disk2.
3. remove and replace your old HDD from the IDE1 with the new HDD.
4. put back the cdrom drive connection.
5. Test
