saving data type as an email address

I know that it is possible to choose hyperlink as the 'data type', but is it possible to save info as an email address?

I am making a company directory with emails and #'s. I will be exporting this data to a excel spreadsheet for formatting and then saving it as a webpage for posting on the company intranet. i would like people to have the option of clicking on the email address and having it open up a new email with the destination address already filled in.

An email hyperlink usually has the protocol mailto:, just like the protocols http:, ftp:, etc. So an email hyperlink should be in the form

mailto:someone@somewhere.com
