Well, I have the exact same problem. This appears to be happening to me only with Linux clients. In a nutshell, I have /etc/hosts set up correctly, I have /nsr/res/servers set up correctly, and when I try to backup either locally or from the backup server I get this message:

save: unknown host name: back01

I have posted on other forums and not been able to resolve this, and the engineer that designed my environment and passed it off to me after running it for 4 years can't resolve it. I'm at the end of my rope.

I have attempted save from var, and the strange thing is that I get the message even if I try to use the server's IP. cat /etc/nsswitch.conf | grep hosts yields this:

hosts: files dns

Unfortunately the person that started the thread above never notes whether or not he resolved the issue and how.

Have you tried running the client and/or server in debug mode? That might help you troubleshoot where the disconnect is occurring.

Later version of NetWorker do a lot more authentication.

Can this point to a potential solution?

Linux operating system was configured to use a "hidden" host file that is different from the /etc/hosts. This was done by using "sysconfig /network" utility.

To fix the problem, use the true hosts file.

I will check into that, although this is happening for me with several customers, not just one, and that would make that conclusion seem unlikely. I have a question though, would I be looking for a "sysconfig" command, or something in the /sysconfig/network file? If I'm looking in the file, then nothing looks out of place. All that the file contains is the hostname of the client server.

Does the client /nsr/logs/daemon.log show any entry like:

Warning, cannot resolve host 'eosbackup.sr.unh.edu' to '132.177.246.96', name server may be misconfigured.

Our backup server has multiple network interfaces and I have to add its ipaddress to the /etc/hosts file to make the above error go away. I only have to do this on Linux systems, I backup SGIs, Sun and Window systems without adding anything to their local hosts files.
