well i installed a SATA 150 gig harddrive, i also installed Win XP PRO on it the drivers on it and everything.

but for some reason it only starts up windows ONLY if it can boot from an xp disk

if the disk is not in the drive, or the bios are not set on "first boot devise cdrom" 3 things might happen.

1: after it does the verifyind dma pool data (its supposed to load windows after this) it goes to a black screen and stays that way (untill i turn it off)

2: after the dma pool data thing it again goes to the black screen with a white loading bar at the bottom and gets stuck on 2% and stays that way (again untill i shut it down)

3: after the dma pool data again it goes to the black screen with a white loading bar which LOADS this time but followed by the blue screen of doom its a blue screen that says:

due to an error windows has to shut down to prevent damage to ur computer

if this is the first time u see this messagee, restart ur comp. or remove any newly installed hardware or contact ypu BLAH BLAH BLAH

now if the win xp boot disk IS in the drive and if the 1st boot devise is a cd rom in which the XP disk is located, then no problem but i still dont like this

i tried formatting the drive again and reinstalling 3 times
same problem.

a friend told me it has something to do with the first sector on the drive being corrupt but i dont know much about this

so could anyone help me? please?

Try copying the files boot.ini, ntldr & ntdetect.com to a newly formatted floppy and see if you can boot into XP by booting from the floppy (you should be able to - and if you can it would suggest your friend might be correct - that the XP boot sector isn't being written to the hard drive properly - in which case you should return the drive as faulty). If it doesn't boot from the floppy, post back with what does happen.

well i have 2 operating systems one on my old 40 gig

and another on my 150 gig (the one that acts strange in term of booting.

when i coppied thouse files to a boot disk then booted windows from it this is what happened

verifying dmi pool data

invalid boot.ini
loading windows
(it was here where it was supposed to get me into the menu to which OS to boot but it didnt it started to load my normal OS

i found this program on the net that might help me if i have a bad sector but i dont know about it

will it really help the damaged sectors?

Click here to enlarge image! Hard disk drive is an integral part of every computer. It stores all your information. One of the most prevalent defects of hard drives are bad sectors on the disk surface. Bad sectors are a part of the disk surface which contains not readable, but frequently necessary information. If your hard drive is damaged by bad sectors, it is not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk losing information stored on it. If you suspect that your hard disk drive is damaged and contains bad sectors, you have difficulties to copy data from your disk, your operating system is unstable or you unable to boot to Windows altogether - don’t rush to throw out your disk and don’t think that your important information is irretrievably lost. Take advantage of HDD Regenerator - the unique program for regeneration of hard disk drives. HDD Regenerator will regenerate your hard drive by magnetic reversal. As a result, not readable damaged information will be restored. With all this going on, the existing information will not be lost! HDD Regenerator regenerates hard disk drives exclusively at physical level. It ignores file system and can be used with FAT, NTFS or any other file system, and also with unformatted or unpartitioned disks. During regeneration, the disk structure is not changed and the existing data is not affected

Slavich - could you post the contents of the boot.ini file, as that sounds like the source of the problem (it must have become corrupted). Didn't realise you had a multiple boot system.

You could try recovery console (you'll need to press F6 and supply your SATA drivers) and then use the bootcfg (bootcfg /rebuils) command:-

never mind i just had a bad boot ini ill try again right now i got a better boot file

ok i tried it again
and again (this time without an error message) it booted my other OS without bringing up the choise

wait ill try again this time sticking the floppy when the thing starts booting

ok this is what i did

i did not insert the boot floppy untill it came to the choise window. i popped in the floppy and cliked in the OS which was on the SATA. same thing happens black screens, white loading bars sam as without the disk

i think i should try unplugging my 40 gig and let it use only the SATA

ok so i unplugged all my HD's exept for the Sata

the first 2 times i tried to bot it with a boot disk there were errors

file missing or corrupt

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl

2nd time

file missing or corrupt

\windows\inf\bios info.inf

but on the 3d time it started up with a floppy
