Sany Vaio laptop - Dead Battery the cause?

Hi,

There is a Sony Vaio that will not turn on at all. No fans, no hard drive noise ... absolutely nothing.

The battery is very dead (has been for a little while). Can the battery cause problems? Is it worth a gamble buying a new battery? Or do I simply have a motherboard problem and need to pitch the laptop.

FYI, I put a Volt meter on the power supply to ensure it was giving the proper voltage. I also put on a generic laptop power supply ... and set it to the proper voltage ... with the same result.

Try pulling the battery out and see if the laptop will boot with just the power supply. If so, that battery is utterly dead.

A battery can become so dead that it is (for all practical purposes) shorted out. When you plug in the PS, all the current is going to the battery and there's none left over to power the unit.

I tried your suggestion, and it will not boot with just the power supply. Same as before ... no fans .. no noise of any kind.

Lol, I believe that is wahnula's subtle way of saying the laptop is probably toast. I agree.

Well, if it doesn't boot without a battery and with a known working external power source attached, to further tinker it's good to have a disassembly guide, right? Especially since Sony engineers brilliantly decided to place the HDD where you need to disassemble the blasted thing to get to it, this guide gives you the keys to the kingdom. It's a better option than "pitch the laptop". And purchasing a new battery would be throwing good money after bad.

Hey, you might get a few steps in and find a loose connector or something obviously damaged, worth a shot. I know I would...

have you tested with a volt meter to see if all the peripherals are getting the correct voltage? did you test all the different power connectors? ive never done it on a laptop, but i thought i'd be worth mentioning. just to see if the components are getting the power they should.
