I recently found and downloaded an older Samba, Samba for Netware. It causes a Netware 4.X server to become a Samba server. It uses an NLM to make the Netware server act as a Samba server. This means you don't have to use the Novell Client anymore, you can just use the MS Client on Windows workstations. Does anyone know if Samba for Netware will run on a 5.X server?

I don't think it would. If you are really motivated to try, don't try it on a production server. I forgot all about this product. They made it for Netware 4.1 only, if I recall, but I remember they officially stopped it once Netware 5 came out. It was more of a cool idea than anything else.

But then again, Novell now owns SuSE, and their next line of products will run on top of Linux, so should be interesting what type of products come out.

If it is an nlm, you could load it and try it out. Worst thing it could do is crash your server so don't mess with a production server. We probably won't see any further development of Samba for NetWare, Novell already includes this functionality in its Native File Access Pack (included with Netware 6), which lets windows, *nix and apple clients talk to a netware server without a novell client.

I imply from what you've said that people no longer use print servers. I know that Windows 2000 will let you print directly to an IP port. Is that what most organizations are doing for printing now?

I do have a copy of Netware 6 on a test server, but haven't put it into production yet.
