Hi

I tried to set up a linux box to share a modem connection with some Windows machines. No problem, used the wizard and it worked fine. Set up the same machine as a Samba server, worked fine (more or less). Tried both at the same time, problems.
I tried to set up the windows machines to use the Linux box as their default gateway, didn't work. Thought about setting up linux box as a proxy server using Squid, would this work? If not any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Chris

What kind of problem do you have??

You probably need NAT to gateway through your Linux box. What firewall do you use??

I'm drunk and tired right now so you're probably better off reading the howto. I'll be back later.

Well you could always go and buy a $29 router and have it running in a few minutes, but lest I incense the purists amongst us, you could read up on ipchains. You could also go the proxy server route with squid but I don't use it, I opted for the easy way out. ;-)

Ipchains? eek, get a newer version of your favorite distro and use iptables! :)

The router is easier, but if you have an old box not doing anything that works just dandy too.

Everything you want to do can be done, check the Howto's at

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a look at trying to set up a manual route in the new year.
I was wondering why ICS and Samba wouldn't work together?
