Currently we still use modems on our systems. The largest system we have is CM 5.2.1 with multiple sites. I'd like to start looking at installing/using SAL to get rid of the modems and make it more like how Avaya would like for the future. I have a few questions.

1. As best I can understand, we (the customer) only need to install the SAL Gateway software, correct? (Assuming we've installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc as described in the docs already) The other SAL servers mentioned in the documents are for Avaya or business partner use?

2. I was planning on using a virtual machine for this and from what I've read so far, this is possible, correct?

3. Has anyone here installed this themselves? If so, is it fairly painless and goes as described in the Avaya docs?

4. I saw this PDF on Avaya's site with links to the software downloads. I see 'Secure Access Link 2.0 Gateway' as well as 2 service packs for 2.0. Regarding the service packs, can you skip installing SP 1 and go straight to SP 2? Does SP 2 have all the contents of SP 1 in it so you don't need to install SP 1 AND SP 2? Or do you really need to install SP 1, then SP 2? Here's the PDF I mentioned:
Thanks!

1. Yes, I have this setup with just one server. You could implement a policy server but its not necessary.

2. Yes, mine is virtual and works fine.

3. I did. I've been working with SAL since 1.5. It was terrible and didn't work. 1.8 was bad too. I never tested 1.8 SP 2. I'm now running 2.0 beta. It works fine. The install docs were missing a lot of information. I think 2.0 is now GA. Hopefully its better.

4. I haven't installed the SP yet. But usually you can just install the software, then the latest SP as it contains all the old SP's.

Thanks for the feedback. There's even a 2.1 document on Avaya's site, but no 2.1 download so I'm not sure when or if 2.1 is out.
