Can someone tell me in basic terms what's the difference between a G3r switch and a S8700 switch? I'm just looking for a brief overview.

Thanks in advance.

The old GR3 switch had the processor on a circuit pack in the carrier. To setup remote cabinets you needed center stage and DS1C's.

With the S8700 the processor is an external server that communicates with controler boards (IPSI) in each port network. Remote cabinets are controled via the LAN/WAN.

With S8700 you get new carriers however many of the old circuit packs are still useable in the new carriers.

Thanks simreal. So it's basically an upgrade from the GR3. And you can add remote sites off of it, like an 8300. Is this correct?

Yes thats correct.

The 8300 isn't needed for remote sites but if you add an 8300 you give youself local survivability.

If you go with an 8500 you can take advantage of enterprise survivability. The 8500 can actually take control of the port networks across the system whereas the 8300 only provides survivability to the local site.
