Hello,

I can't install antivirus software on win 98 machine because every time i execurte the install, either automatically or manually the autorun program and the setup.exe gives a general protection fault error specifying the s3_2.drv. I see this driver is in the cab files and seems to be a cdrom or sound driver.

i've never seen this and can't get help from mcafee and i am wondering if anyone out there has any sound advice on this particular error.

thank you kindly,
ptt :)

If memory serves, this is a driver file for a s3 trio card. I remember because we used this cheap chipset awhile back. Try removing the driver (make sure you have it to reinstall first!!!), load a standard display driver, and it should install fine. Now reinstall the correct driver, and test everything out.

Here's a Google advanced search of that..where you can get the driver and inf files...

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.

Also, press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys with the Desktop showing, and shut down all programs, except Explorer and Systray, before installing the AV program.

Also check the BIOS for Virus protection in the Boot sector...If it's Enabled.....Disable it.....the AV software your installing may be trying to change the boot sector(which it needs to do to be useful, usually).....yet i would've expected a diff error message upon install.

ok thanks everyone...

somehow somebody got the idea I am installing av sw ...
i'm not

i am installing antivirus software

i know i have mad viruses because i did a partial completed on line scan with symantec and saw some.

i couldn't complete it or irradicate it because i kept disconnecting ...i'm on 56 k modem...
and also i did change the option in the browser not to time out but they did anyway...eventually.

so i've tried to install two different mcafee solutions and tried to install a download of symantec...but it needs i.e. service pack 2 for 5 or higher..

i downloaded i.e. 6 and it was trying to connect with the net and it couldn't get what it needed to complete
cache corrupt...

i cleared out history same problem

also something interesting when i use msconfig 20 new load = statements come up when i am deleting checks and i hit apply...i assume this is the virus..

it also rechecks aim byitself when i hit apply to uncheck it, it rewrites another aim with a check in the startup tab along with 20 load = (blank) statements prior to my reboot.

my mcaffee disks stall at midway through install and i can't finish the antivirus installs

Read this
....
also follow the links in the article

Go Start>Run REGEDIT and delete all references in these keys to that aim crud....Do Not delete the "key" or anything you're not sure of right click in the Right side window pane to delete the value....

Post back unknowns you find

I NEVER install anything while online...I always download the .zip (whatever) first., sign offline, restart(to clear the cache of junk)...and minimize/stop tasks running that are unnecessary........as was mentioned earlier by another..
