Hi

It's now possible to run the old File Manager winfile.exe
from Windows NT 4.0 (which is contained in the freely down-
loadable Service Pack 6a for Windows NT 4.0 at also under Windows Vista.

However, you have to re-enable that file manager to run
it under Vista. Look at the website link pasted below
how to do that.

winfile.exe - File Manager Revival on Windows Vista:

see also this thread: thread1583-1344148

The error message that SheConvertPathW could not be
cound in Shell32.dll should disappear after the
re-enabling procedure.

Just now you going to tell me progman works too. Then I'll have to dig out them old 3.1 disks and reload.

The last working progman.exe is contained in the
Windows XP Service Pack 1a (can be downloaded
freely at microsoft.com). Later versions of progman.exe
(in Windows XP Service Pack 2) are only "stubs" which
execute the explorer process. Progman.exe is not included
in Windows Vista. I also don't know whether it is still
running there... might be the same case as with the file
manager... I would have to revive it probably, if there
is a necessity.

BTW: don't use the progman.exe from Windows 3.1, because
it's a 16bit application which cannot deal with long
filenames etc. Take the one from Windows XP, SP1a.

sorry, I was wrong with the Service Pack in my
last reply. The program manager is *not* contained
in Windows XP, Service Pack 1a.

This thread also mentions Program.exe, seems to be in contradiction to "davidschpc", but I have never tried it myself.
