Can someone please tell me whether it is possible to run an application on m/c B from m/c A on a W2K peer to peer network. (specifically Outlook Express). File and printer sharing work fine but the application only loads from the local machine.

Thanks

? outlook express is part of 2k - why are you trying to run it from another machine?

Please explain circumstances more completely for help.

Thanks for your response.

I have 2x W2K machines one is used only for imaging with large discs, Photoshop, scanners, ink jet printers etc. This is connected peer to peer with another W2K machine, which is used for Internet access, email, MS office and other misc applications together with virus protection, firewall and Laser printer.

I have split them because of a history of instability on the imaging system - particularly with the Zone alarm firewall.

So far the split has worked well, but there are occasions when it would be convenient to access email and Internet from the Imaging system. Obviously I want to use the existing (4) identities and filing structure on the email machine and I had hoped to run the exe file on the email machine from the imaging machine through the network.

I get the feeling that this does not work peer to peer as it loads some dlls from the imaging machine and opens up the imaging machine IE6 and OE.

John,

Have you got internet connection sharing (ICS) enabled on the machine connected to the internet? ( As you don't say Imaging machine is connected to Internet separately, you will need to share the other machine's connection. Once you do this, IE & OE will work on the other machine (but remember, the machines will have their own repositories for stored email & address book items). You may need to reconfigure Zone alarm (presumably only running on the internet connected machine).

HTH.

Thanks again, however I am not trying to run the imaging machine OE and IE through the internet machine - I'm trying to run the internet machine applications from the imaging machine. The objective is to keep the firewall, adaware and other stuff off the imaging machine. I find I can run acrobat4, winzip,Ulead video studio 5, this way by running the exe file, from the imaging machine but Realplay,Palm software and none of the Microsoft stuff will run. I guess I either keep 2 separate machines and just share files and devices as at present or put the whole lot back onto one machine.

John,

You generally need to install software on the machine its going to run on - as often it requires registry entries and system files (which go in \winnt\system32 on 2k) to run. When you try to run an exe located on another machine, it will only work if the system files also exist on your machine and if it uses registry settings, it can create the ones it needs on your machine. As you've found - this is hit and miss.

btw - if you do use ICS, you only need a firewall on the machine connected to the internet (though virus checker should be installed & adaware if you use it - but you only need to run adaware occasionally....)

Thanks very much for your help. Now I understand.
I think I shall go back to one machine.
