Hi,
I want to run a webserver on a Compaq Pentium II 350MHGZ with 128mb ram and 10Gig HDD. I have a 512kbs connection through LAN and the network card had drivers for linux.
Its a Compaq Deskpo EP Series 6350/4.3UK. But has been modified with a better harddrive and the addition of a CDROM.
My question is, can i use this as a webserver with linux if so what do i need and would it be better to run it through apache on windows.

To take your questions in order:

Yes, you can.

Any of the main distributions. As you mention a 512Kb link I suspect this is to be visible on the internet, not just a local server, so I'd suggest you configure it as a hardened server - few if any services offered (apart from httpd) and the firewall configured in a suitably secure manner.

Finally, no way! (This is a Linux thread, so what answer did you expect! :) ). Seriously, though Apache is good I'd not wish to put too much trust in Windows. If you decide to go the MS route, I'd suggest using W2000 or XP Professional, server edition, and add a suitable firewall.

Hi,
A Quick update im not going into linux as it seems a whole new area which i will struggle to grasp, instead i fished out my old Windows 2000Advanced Server disk which works well and has a nice GUI for me to use, i always disliked large amounts of command line altough i realise any webserver needs some
Thanks Anyway
