Hi,
I have win98SE, IE6 and recently added Norton Internet Security. If the computer is on for a shortish time, it will shut down fine. If it's been on for hours, it will hang at shutdown. The last fews days when it's been happening, I do control+alt+delete before shutdown. I've noticed that if it shows rundll32, it will hang at shutdown and if it doesn't show it, it will shutdown fine. Endtasking rundll32 does not seem to help. As I recall, it just sort of crashes. Any ideas?

Rundll32 does exactly what it's name suggests, it runs 32 bit dll's. Therefore it looks like a dll is not exiting properly and leaving rundll32 in memory. Are there any programs that are run automatically after a set time, if so try disabling them and see if the problem repeats.

I'm wondering if it could be Symantec NetDetect. It has a scheduled task every 5 minutes daily and will stop the task if it runs for 72 hours. I guess I could leave on the computer and if rundll32 shows up, I could stop the live up-date and change to "notify me" of undate and see if that works?? Other than that, I have "the cleaner" (which lists the various programs going on in the background). This has just started happening since getting Norton so maybe that's it. Thanks for your post!!
