RRAS Problem 1

Hi guys..

got a problem .. I have set up RRAS on windows 2000 server. Using the normal protocols etc.. whenever i dial in to the server, i am authenticated by the server, but cannot see anything beyond that.. i cannot see anything on the network or view any of the shared folders...

can anyone help?

Is "Enable IP Routing" enabled? (On the IP Routing Properties in IP)

If you do a IPCONFIG on the client do you get the correct default gateway?

ps. I cannot even view the shared folders on the server that i am connecting to...

NO browsing .. nothing but authentication, could some GURU help out

Just posted this to another thread about a VPN problem, but I think it might help you as well, so I'll make a few edits and pass along .. .

First, make sure that you have Client for Microsoft Networks installed and enabled on the dialup connection (networking tab on the dialup connection properties).

Computer browsing (which is different than internet browsing) depends upon broadcast messages for name resolution. Broadcasts are not supposed to cross subnets. Even if your RAS IPs are in the same block as the remote (server side) network, they are in a different subnet. If you type 'ipconfig' in a command window, you will note that the subnet for the RAS address is 255.255.255.255. The IP is an endpoint, and as such does not belong to any other network.

Now that the details are out of the way, there are several ways around it, but your best bet is to set up a WINS server on your RRAS server and point your RAS connection to it.

To verify that you are seeing a name resolution problem, first verify TCP/IP connectivity. Open a command window and type 'ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' using the RAS address of the RRAS server. You should see 4 good replies, verifying that you are actually connected on both ends. Next, try the same with the LAN IP of the RRAS server, then move on to the IP of another computer on the LAN. If at any point it doesn't work, take note of and report the specific error message, don't just say it doesn't work.

If all goes well there, again open a command window and type 'NET VIEW \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', again with the RAS address of the RRAS server. You should see a list of shared resources on that computer. Move on to the RRAS server's LAN IP, then another computer on the LAN. Again, report specific errors, if needed.

If you are able to see the resources using NET VIEW IP, the WINS server should get you fixed up.

Hi Guys

This is what I have tried...

I've managed to log onto my RRAS server dialing in.
IPCONFIG/ALL has the correct ip address ranges.. and the subnet mask as 255.255.255.255

I can ping the server address OK, that is of the LAN IP.
My DNS server resolves host name of the server to its corresponding IP address..

I cannot ping any other PCs that are on the network..

net view yields this response..

"No Logon Servers Available to Service your Logon Request
"
I must note that I have not set up a WINS server, and am not sure if this is the cause of the problem. I have DNS setup.

Its strange, but very confusing.

Would appreciate any other possible solutions.

I can ping the server LAN address but not any other machines on the network when i dial in.

Its not wins, how many ports does your modem have? Can you see anything? Sounds like its a problem with the authentication, you arent being allowed certain rights.

thanks guys.. will try wins.. in terms of authetication, i am authenticated by the server but cannot map drives or see any shared resources on the server..

when dialling in when i type

net view..

i get back error 6118..

Hi 169623,

I don't think its authenication or wins. It sounds like the router simply isn't routing.

Add a couple of static routes to your different subnets - make sure a static route exists to your servers internal IP address.

still have the same probs...

can ping server LAN address of the server only
tried the other solutions...but they still did not see to work..

IP address of server is 10.0.0.15, mask 255.255.255.0 dg 10.0.0.18..

cannot ping the gateway address either...
