Hi,

I am trying to install an application which has client/server mode on windows XP machines, when I try to run application from clients it gives me error "RPC server unavailable". Is this application can only be run in Domain environment, because according to my findings RPC server unavailable means it requiers a DC to authenticate user login. But I only have Windows XP Pro. machines, any body can help me to run this application in Windows XP without DC.

Any ideas...

Regards,
Tayyab

RPC is not a domain-only feature, and problems are not due to the lack of Domain authentication.

Are you using Service Pack 2? If the application uses named pipes it might not work at all under SP2. Otherwise you should open port 445 and likely make some registry changes for the RPC service:

Dear Bill Castner,

Thank you for your reply. Yeah its Windows XP Pro. with SP2.
I opened the port 445. I tried to find registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Pollicies\Microsoft\Windows NT\RPC but could not find RPC in the hive.
Then I checked Group Policy and got the Restriction for Unauthenticated RPC Clients object, but it was not configured.
But these both keys should be configured by default as mentioned at Microsoft TechNet.

Any how, I disabled the GPO for RPC authentication but no joy. It is still generating the same error "RPC server unavailable".

Would you please guide me to resolve the issue.

Best Regards,
Tayyab

Dear Bill castner,

Thank you again for the reply. I'll try your suggested solution as well but before that I want to introduce with the application.

It is gesigned by the Volkswagon group for the car repair operations guide namee ELSAWin.It is not a complicated application, all the data is stored in Acrobat format, it just installs on a Windows XP machine you can say it as Server, in the folder C:\Elsawin, now we have to just share this folder and from the workgroup just access the shared folder and install a client application, I did the same, it installed properly, but when I tried to run the application from client it generated the error RPC server unavailable, I tried it on another SP2 machine and got the same error.

Your help would be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Tayyab
