Hi

i have a customer who has five sites. all connected by wan vpn links. they have one server in the main HQ and all remote offices log on over the links. They are putting in servers in each of the remote sites to do logons, dns etc. i was just wondering what kind of config would the hq router have if the subnets were the following

HQ - 192.168.1.0
remote1 - 192.168.2.0
remote2 - 192.168.3.0
remote3- 192.168.4.0

this customer belongs to a company that i will be joining soon and i just want to be familiar with the kind of config that it will have . how does the hq router know where to forward packets to for remote 3 as opposed to remote2 . i have setup this situation with two offices before but not more.

i presume the remote offices just has its own subnet and the HQs subnet in its routing table, whats the story with the HQ router

the HQ router will have an interface to each remote
that interface will have an ip in the subnet of the remote
so the networks will all be "connected" through the HQ.

or if there are point to point links then your going to need a routign protocol or static routes to tell each site where the other networks are.

ok thaks for that. how u mean when you say the HQ router will have an interface to each remote?? what kind of interface

whatever medium the circuits are...
T1, Ethernet, ATM... depends on what kind of facility you put between the sites.

it would be ATM. would each remote router have the other destinations in their routing table too or would everything be routed theu the HQ

well you would probably be using a Hub and Spoke topology...
so everythnig would route through HQ. the routes could still be in the remote tables... but the path would be through the HQ.

you could mesh them with multiple PVC's but its not usually done that way..
if you want mesh.. youde be better off going with a MPLS design.
