Routing Mail

I have two Exchange 5.5 servers. The first server is the main and the second the backup, each have their share of mailboxes. I just put a firewall in place but it can only route incoming mail traffic <smtp and pop3> to one server. How can I tell the main server that if that mailbox is not on your list, send it over to the other server?

Exchange isn't too good at the 'main server' vs 'backup server' concept.

Presumably one existed initailly, and then the second was added?

Are they both in the same site, or different sites?

Yes, same site.

If they're really in the same site then Exchange will automatically route traffic between the servers.

Does each server's Recipients Container list all the mailboxes of both servers?

Yes, each server has all recipients mailboxes, so I should just route mail traffic to the main server?

Yes, the server that has the IMS will receive the SMTP email and (so long as the address matches a valid mailbox) automatically route the message to the correct server.
