hi all,
got a problem with my RV082 linksys router. I've connected my ADSL connection to the router, and i can ping the ADSL router from a pc connected via the router - and get replies perfectly fine.

However, when i try to connect to the internet, i can't get on. Logs show that both the wan and the lan is connected.

Other pc's connected to the ADSL router via another gateway can get onto the internet fine - implying the problem lies at the router end.

Could someone shed some light?

thanks

Are you using a routing Protocol?
Maybe the packets are not forwarded to the adsl router because no route is specified...

thanks Parcival21 - checked the router and it has RIP disabled at the moment.

However when i go to enable it, there's a choice between RIPv1 or RIPv2, and RIPv2 broadcast or muilticast - do you know what, if any, are the significances of either?

Hi Chronos

RIPv1 is limited to classful routing; if you need variable length masks use v2.

RIPv1 sends updates via broadcast, which may introduce more traffic than you want; RIPv2 can be set to multicast the updates.

Configuration guide can be found at
This is also worth seeing:

Hope this is a start for you

You should not need RIP at all. I am guessing that by your email your connection looks like
Internet --> ADSL Router --> Linksys router?

If this is true the Linksys is using PAT so you should not have to worry about RIP. If you configured your outside(WAN) interface on your RV082 manually on the linksys router make sure you added a DNS entry. Did you try and ping an Internet address by IP address? Also try a tracert

yup gtmoore - you're right, our connection is exactly that.

I am able to ping the ADSL router from a pc on the other side of the linksys - but when i try and ping or tracert to the internet then i get request timed out. Tracert only goes so far as the internal facing IP of the ADSL router. Not surprisingly, internet access doesn't work either.

If you got anymore ideas, i would be really grateful.

We have a similar connection here and it works fine. We have Internet ---> Cisco router ----> multiple Linksys routers and by using the default config on the linksys we can reach the Internet. The only thing we changed was we added the IP address & DNS manually to the WAN interface. Make sure your ADSL router does not have any bad routes in it. Also try do some pings from the adsl router to your WAN conenction on the Linksys. From the sounds of your tracert the problem might be in your ADSL router. What kind of router is it?

Its a Draytek Vigor 2600x - and you might be right about it being the problem.

I can actually ping the external facing IP of the ADSL router so there shouldn't be any problem getting onto the internet.

Tracert also doesn't work from the other gateway attached to the ADSL router - and internet's working fine there.

Up to this point i've trying to build the linksys on another separate network - might bite the bullet and stick it between the current gateway and the ADSL. Actually if i switched off the firewall on the linksys - this shouldn't effect the internet connection right? Just thinking of this in case the vigor's firewall is conflicting with the linksys.

Just wanted to close the post - thanks for your assists, installed the router and everything was fine.

In the end it turned out the be a DNS issue - once that was resolved, just stuck the router in between the server and ADSL router - and everything went peachy.

Also had to make sure port forwarding was set up for email and what not, no problems so far.

Thanks again guys!
