Router Question For Newbie

We have a 2600 series router and a frame relay connection. We are in the process of changing over to a cable modem. Does the router need to be reconfigured with the new static i.p. that the cable company will give us or will it do it automatically? If it has to be reconfigured, is it a big deal to do it? I can hook it up to my laptop, run hyperterminal and access the router but from there I have no experience with routers.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

No, if it is just changing an IP then that is a simple task. But since you are getting a cable connection do you have another Ethernet port to spare on the router? The Cables won't use the same port as the Frame Relay.

We have some type of converter that the telephone lines run into and the it jumps to ethernet (rj-45) into the router. The cable modem has the same ethernet connection.

Does the router automatically recognize the new i.p. or is there changes that have to be made?

You'll most likely have to manually change the IP and DNS information when you switch providers. What model of 2600 is it (2611, 2621,...), and what port will the new cable be plugged into? If you get me that information I can post the process of changing the DNS and IP.

Well if the company is giving the ip to you via DHCP you don't need to change the config in my opinion. If they give you the static ip you will need to connect to the router the way you described it.
Then do the following:
enable to enter enable modus
conf t to enter config modus
interface "interface name" to select the interface
ip adress "new IP adress" "Subnet mask"
end to exit config modus
wr to save the config

Hope that's all. Haven't done much configuration lately so I might forget something.

We are being provided a static I.P. address. The model is a 2610. We have someone coming in to make the router changes. I was just curious as to how much trouble it is to do that. I really have no router experience at all. I think you guys answered my questions. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.
