All my edge routers are synched to my core router's time. I want my core router to synch with my Windows 2000 Server. I run the command ntp sever x.x.x.x on the core router, but it's not working. When I do sh ntp status on the core router, it says that it is not synchronized. How can I get my router time to synch with my Win2K server?

Thanks,
Nicole

Verify that your server is using the same port number as the router. Some devices use UDP port 37 with others use UDP port 123. I don't recall which port the router uses (I'll research this later).

for firewall issues you may have to specify the source interface that you are using to sync to the server...

when you do a show ntp ass..
what do you see

i'm not going through any fw. when i do sh ntp ass, it sees that ntp is configured, but the time never changes on the router to match the server's time.

Thanks,
Nicole

do you have to specify on the win2k server who is authorized to to connect to you?

when you do a show ntp ass can you put the output?
does it say syncronized? or configured?

example

router#sho ntp ass

address ref clock st when poll reach delay offset disp
*~a.a.a.a b.b.b.b 4 38 64 377 193.3 -7.95 0.4
* master (synced), # master (unsynced), + selected, - candidate, ~ configured

I don't think the standard Time Service in Windows 2000 will work. I have tried this a few times and never got it working - the Windows Time Service is SNTP and not NTP, you can probably get a low-end router (800-series) or a Wireless Access Point to sync the time off Windows 2000, but anything wanting an NTP server won't work.
The best solution is to sync a core router off a real time server on the Internet (there are loads....) or a GPS device, then sync your Windows 2000 Domain controller off that, as well as your internal switches etc.
