I'm trying to set my pc on my home network. I've forgotten the login and how to set the wep key. Does anyone have some basic instruction. I've used ipconfig/all to get to the login screen. Now I need to get the user name and password.

It's a netgear router on a motorola modem. I'm trying to convert from WEP to WAP. Someone told me to login to the router and change it there.

Thanks
Tricia

You should know your own router's user and password. If you don't remember there is not much we can do.

You could try to reset your router, to factory defaults and get the user, and password back to their default values. Your manual should tell you how.

If not you can always go to Netgear's website to look for the online manual.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

yourkeylady,

Look up the default login & password on the Netgear site. Most routers have a "reset" switch on the rear panel (usually recessed) that needs to be pressed and held to reset the password and logon to factory defaults. It should also tell you the default IP address.

There is a program that tells you about your network, i.e. IP addresses of all devices, it's called Network Magic and has a free trial.

Thanks for the info wahnula. That was a great help. I'm learning more as I go. The cd that came with the router uses WPA, but says that may not be usable for some hardware.

We live in a chicken wired adobe house. So a wireless connection may not be possible inside. I may have to make a box outside the house for the router.

vacunita: I realize I should know the password and user name. But my brother set it up for me. He was in a hurry and didn't take notes and is now in california.

Thanks
Tricia

yourkeylady,

If wireless is impossible or impractical look into power-line networking. It has evolved from its abysmal beginnings to become a practical and fast alternative to wireless.

The "hardware" that may be incompatible with WPA usually refers to the wireless card. It's always a good idea to have the same brand card as router, but most play nice together.
