Hi All

Have a client who wishes to host his own websites and has already resolved the various issues with Apache, MySQL etc.

The sites are currently hosted on the Broadband 'gateway' PC with the other PCs accessing the net via Internet Sharing Connection.

The client wants to host the sites on another box within the network utilising an existing D-Link 8 port switch.

What router would be suitable for this configuration, please?

TIA

Nearly anything, as the 8-port switch gives you enough ports; there is no discussion of using the router as an edge firewall appliance; no mention of wireless; and no mention of VPN needs.

Even SOHO class 4-port routers will have enough port forwarding and basic features to accomodate your client's needs.

Thanks for your response

A wireless router is not necessarily required and one of the ports on the switch is cabled to a Wireless Access Point to enable access to the network for laptops, etc.

VPN is not required but would be useful if available within the capabilities of the router.

The webserver would be running on a Win2K box using ZoneAlarm as a firewall - if unsatisfactory, please advise.

Sounds fine to me.
Any SOHO class router should serve.

Personally i am fan of SOHO Sonicwall routers. Bit on the pricy side, but well worth it. Easy to setup for corporate and home use.

I have used Fortinet, Cisco, and Watchguard firewalls and they all work fine. All three of them have models for SOHO environments that run $200-$300, and the SOHO models usually support some sort of VPN connectivity. A Cisco PIX 501 would more than do the trick, and they just released the ASA 5505 (the ASA lines provide more antivirus/IDS/IPS capability than the PIX lines) which would work well.
