Hello,

I have read where taking the rootkit off the computer by using software isnt worth it and that you are better off reinstalling XP .......is that true ?

Thx,

Geeknerd

Depends on the rootkit. In myh opinion, you are better off re-installing the OS.

Sbrews,

Thanks for the advice. Do you recommend reinstaling the OS at least once a year? Thanks...........

Reinstalling the OS once every X where X = month/3 months/year/etc. is really personal preference.

If there are no rootkits/malware/etc on the system and its performance is acceptable, then dont reinstall. On the other hand, if there is rootkits/malware/etc or the performance is sluggish (compared to when it was first installed) then yes, re-install.

I usually reload the complete OS about once a year... but that being said, I do install AND remove a lot of software during that time (trying things out, etc). That software doesnt always clean up all its stuff/registry entries and is one of the causes of said sluggishness.
