How do I change the root password without knowing it. SA left with no turnover. I can login to the OS as another user but it has no root privs. Help!

I havn't tried this on Digital unix, but the normal procedure is to boot the system into mini root from a bootable CD or Tape. This gives you a basic operating system with a null root password. You then edit the password file to remove the root password and finally reboot the system in the normal way. Your sys admin manuals should give you full details.

bbrady,

This should do the trick --

To recover from a lost/forgotten (or stolen !) root password on True 64 Alpha servers - boot into single user mode -
>>>boot -flags s
This will log in as root user with only the /(root) filesystem mounted, mount the /usr and /tmp filesystens (or just mount -a), now issue the passwd command.
Finally reboot or init 3
