root forwarders cant ping

i'v just changed the dns server on my network from root server and added some external forwarders and now ping etc externally from that server..however i need to ping and respond to pings from a another server on the same network but cannot ie if i ping an ip i get unrechable if i ping an adress still unreachable but shows the ip address? (so resolves it sort of)
not really a newtork person so help very much appreciated

If you are getting a network unreachable error, then it is not a problem with DNS, but rather you are having a network problem. Try running a traceroute (tracert on Windows) to the machine you are trying to ping to see where the problem lies.
